About Alexandria Book Scanner

Contact:
contact@alexandriabookscanner.eu

Short description of the device:

Alexandria Book Scanner responds to the digitisation challenge of mankind by providing the only really protective book digitasation solution combined with high image quality. The combination of several innovative solutions in the book digitisation process is result of a thorough cooperation of developers, designers and practitioners. Alexandria Book Scanner is the only device which enables fast and high quality book digitization at 45°opening angle.

Main characteristics:

The main innovation of the product is the optical head based on the patent which enables the robot to perform digitisation by opening the book by 45º.

The digital camera built in the device enables much higher performance in picture quality as compared to the industrial standard. The picture resolution reaches 39 megapixels with 16-bit colour depth (more than 600 dpi at letter size).

The shooting and the exposition take places within the same closed optical system. Consequently, external light does not influence the process, allowing for higher and more uniform quality to be achieved than is the case with the industrial standard.

The book-bed and the optical head move towards each other automatically.

The Alexandria Book Scanner is the only device which uses a multi-function canvas. The canvas is pulled between the pages to hold the book and avoid its closure. In the process, it protects the individual pages from damage as the optical head touches the canvas and not the pages. Since it slips behind all individual digitised pages, it provides an even background to each page. The canvas also enables backuping. If a page is damaged and parts of it are missing, the canvas prevents the next page from being scanned with it. Importantly, the canvas also equalises the focus of the entire page.

Pages are turned by gravitation as the book-bed is automatically turned. Individual pages are therefore not touched which minimises the damage otherwise caused by leafing the pages.

The canvas is inserted behind a page by the means of a vacuum-operated suction device which lifts the page and then drops it after the canvas has been automatically placed behind it. Other scanning products use vacuum-operated suction devices for the entire page-turning process, while the Alexandria Book Scanner only uses it initially to lift the page which is much more protective.

The result of the precise scanning process is a distortion-free picture, and the scanned pages remain even because of the minimal 45º opening.

The optical head reaches the innermost part of the spine, therefore the picture is distortion-free at the spine too, and no damage occurs.

The book lies on its cover, not on its spine, which protects the book.

The book-bed at the spine is made of rubberised canvas, it is flexible, protective and adapts to its shape.

The robot can digitise small-format, miniature books also.
